What is Schlaraffia?

Humor, Friendship and Art – connected worldwide

Schlaraffia meeting – fellowship with humor and art

🦉 In a nutshell: Schlaraffia is a worldwide fellowship of men who gather regularly to laugh, create, and build genuine friendships through art, humor, and play. It's hard to explain – but unforgettable to experience. And yes, you'll learn German along the way!

A World Apart from Everyday Life

Imagine an evening where work stress stays outside. Where titles and careers don't matter. Where a doctor, a carpenter, a teacher, and an artist laugh, play, and become friends. That's Schlaraffia – and it's been happening since 1859.

Founded in Prague by German-speaking artists and intellectuals, Schlaraffia has grown into a global community with over 200 chapters on five continents. The motto: "In arte voluptas" – In art lies joy.

Perfect for Heritage Seekers & Language Lovers

Are you curious about your German, Austrian, or Swiss roots? Do you want to practice German in a setting that's actually fun – not a classroom? Schlaraffia offers a unique immersive experience where you'll pick up vocabulary, humor, and cultural traditions naturally. It's learning without textbooks, surrounded by friends.

How Does It Work?

Members – called Schlaraffen – meet regularly for a Sippung (meeting). The venue is the Burg (castle), and each local chapter is called a Reych (realm).

Each Sippung follows a playful structure: welcoming by the chairman (the Fungierende), followed by speeches, songs, humorous performances, wordplay duels, and convivial socializing. Everything is play – with a wink and a smile.

What is a "Pilger"? That's what first-time guests are called. After attending three or more times, you can become a Prüfling (candidate) and begin your journey to full membership. No pressure – come at your own pace!

Who Is Schlaraffia For?

Schlaraffia welcomes men who've stayed curious. Who appreciate humor and aren't afraid to laugh at themselves. Who value genuine conversation over superficial networking. Who enjoy art and have something to contribute – whether it's a poem, a song, a speech, or simply heartfelt laughter.

Schlaraffen are individualists from all walks of life and age groups. What unites them: a sense of humor, love of play, and a longing for real human connection – away from screens and deadlines.

🌍 At Home Worldwide

What began as a small artists' circle in Prague is now a global community: over 200 chapters on every continent. From the Americas to Europe, Australia to South America. What connects them all: the German language as a shared bond and the Schlaraffen game as a shared home.

Travel to Philadelphia, Vienna, São Paulo, or Sydney – visit a local Sippung and within minutes you're no longer a stranger, but a guest among friends. Schlaraffia makes the world smaller and warmer.

🗣 Why German? Schlaraffia was founded in 1859 in Prague by German-speaking artists. German has remained the connecting language of all Schlaraffen worldwide, regardless of nationality. Don't worry if your German isn't perfect – our chapter in Washington is happy to help you along!
